I Married You, Not Your Family and Nine Other Relationship Myths That Will Ruin Your Marriage by Linda Mintle, PhD, has a very long title but the help that you will attain by reading this book comes quick. This book is easy to read and is Christian based, which is very important to me. It is not going to push you in the wrong direction and make things worse. Included is advice on how to be freed from guilt, how to reconnect with your spouse, how to empower your spouse and also how to show empathy. You will learn healthy marriage strategies, as well as unhealthy behaviors, and so many other valuable lessons and tips to help make your relationship better. I'll admit, I read chapter 7 entitled "Growing Apart" first, due to some problems in my own marriage, but after I read that, I couldn't put the book down. Another one of my favorite chapters is chapter 10, entitled "Infidelity". If there is one book you read this year about marriages, I suggest it be this one.

A very curious and interesting thing happened to me during these hard times in my life, a few months ago, when I was coping with problems in my marriage. When I was reading the book mentioned above, I came across The Case for Falling in Love: Why We Can't Master the Madness of Love -- and Why That's the Best Part, by Mari Ruti, PhD. It interestingly and similarly has "myths and truths" listed throughout the chapters. So, I thought "how funny..." maybe I was meant to read this book as well, and at the same time! One of the things it teaches us is that men and women are really not all that different, and want the same basic things out of life." "Ruti guides women toward emotionally healthy dating practices, non-combative (yet empowering) attitudes toward dating and the opposite sex, and the preservation of the beauty, mystery and nuance of classic love and romance." Chapter 7, entitled "It's All About The Thing," discusses "our sense of wholeness" and why we are consistently trying to find a perfect substitute for it, weather it be things we do to make ourselves happy, to making it that special someone in our lives. This is the one chapter that I suggest you should read in depth, if you get a hold of this spectacular book.

I have learned so much from these two books so I wanted to share them with you, and hope you find the time to pick up copies, learn something, and be enlightened. Best wishes!

As an art history student, I trained my eye in composition and continued this disciplined study in my photography. I was always the one taking photos of family and friends, but it was my travel photos that garnered the most attention. I am not new to the business or art worlds. I worked in fashion and art for many years, six of them spent in Rome and New York. Cream Mascara – nothing special compared to other mascaras. This specific one was rather clumpy to me. My eyelashes are fine, and medium length. The tube was easy to use, and could get a lot of product on the brush, however I think it would allow for too much product, because it felt like my lashes were being smothered with mascara. I wanted it to be more watery.

Creamy makeup compact (cream foundation) – a lot of pigment and covers well. Oily and smooth application. This would be too oily if you have combination to oily skin. I suggest you use this if you have dry to combination skin.

Eye shadow brush (crease brush) – works perfectly with eye colors, and conforms to the shape of your eye well. Blends shadow very well. The handle is long and comfortable to use.

Daisy Fuentes' book, Unforgettable You: Mastering the Elements of Style, Spirituality and Allure is a great addition to your self help book collection. She writes on her own history, such as how she became a model, and the struggles that she went through to get there. There are several questionnaires to fill out about yourself. They offer a certain insight on a woman's life, because, "...a truly unforgettable woman never stops asking questions (of herself and of others)." p. 245.

Fuentes encourages journal writing, for daily reflection and so you can look back on it in the future. In addition, scattered throughout the book are encouraging quotes as well as several beautiful real life photographs of the author and her family. There is a chapter on spirituality and even one on sex etiquette. Topics on beauty and style also come into play in this fun guide for women. Upon my first use, I was surprised at how simple it was to operate, and how quickly I was able to cover the entire area of skin I wanted to treat . You should have enough time to use it in the morning before work. I was a little scared at first because I didn’t know how the light pulse would feel, but since it happens so quickly, it did not really bother me. The light pulse is pretty bright, so I chose to close my eyes as I was using it. The light pulse feels sort of like a slap or pinch, but it is very fast, so the slight pain sensation goes away very quickly. I started off on the first strength setting (which is advised to do for everyone).

Fabiola Arias is a women's wear designer who graduated from Parsons in May of 2009. Arias was born in Cuba. At the age of five, after living in Mexico for a year, she and her family left to Miami. Her mother and father were always her biggest inspirations - her mother, a costume designer for film and Spanish soap operas, and her father, a cinematographer and television producer, turned journalist. At five years old Fabiola first discovered John Galliano while watching television, and from then on she knew she wanted to be a designer. Arias studied fine art, specifically painting and sculpture, since she was a small child. At 16, while studying at Design & Architecture Senior High, she debuted her first fashion show during Miami Fashion Week. All Arias fantasized about at the time was to go to Parsons and live in New York, but her mother always told her she had better get a scholarship if she was to go. She eventually did receive a scholarship - a HUGE one.

By the time she had almost graduated from Parsons, Fabiola had interned for Narciso Rodriguez, Esteban Cortazar, and Marc Jacobs, and she knew that what she truly wanted was to have her own business. She didn't want to waste any time, so she researched and found sample makers in the garment center, factories and wholesalers who could work with her on her new collection. Fabiola made all of her samples first, and when she was finished her collection, she organized a list of PR companies and buyers that she wanted to contact. She introduced herself over the phone and told them about her new line. She remembers now how interesting it was to hear how pleasantly surprised they were with such a young person going completely on their own with such a tremendous venture. She set up private appointments and used a friends office spaces during fashion week. Arias' hard work paid off when Ikram Goldman, boutique owner of Ikram in Chicago, bought her first collection, as well as Mayda Cisneros Couture Collection in Coral Gables, Florida.

Fast forward to the present, and Fabiola is currently finalizing the production for her Fall 2010 collection, as well as a Japanese Fall 2010 collection which she's being sponsored for by Shinmai Creators Project and which she will present for Japan Fashion Week in Tokyo March 2010. Arias was already flown to Tokyo in October 2009 to select her fabrics which are also being sponsored by Shinmai. Additionally, Fabiola was invited to do a trunk show at Neiman Marcus, Coral Gables, at the end of 2009. The experience was amazing and the response was incredible. As a result, Fabiola has been invited again to do it in Bal Harbour for February 2010.

This protein rich liquid is like a miracle for dry, hay like crispy hair. I loved the way it made my hair look so much more full after JUST ONE USE. It actually did seem like my hair was stronger, after the first use. It is easy to use, and doesn't take hours until it is done..more like 20 minutes (depending on how long it takes you to apply the product as well). I am not an expert, and I used it with ease. The directions are direct and easy to read. ApHogee Two Step Protein Treatment restores and mends dull, lifeless hair. It improves the texture and tone of severely damaged hair.

Step 1 puts protein back into the hair and bonds the cuticle, repairing it from the inside out, and protects it against future damage.

Step 2 infuses moisture into the hair. It is also great to use just before you color to get a more desirable, even color effect.

Pros: Hair is stronger, and conditions nails at the same time, if you use it with out gloves.

Cons: liquid can drip on clothing, due to its thin state out of the bottle. I suggest you use it with your head held over the bathtub. In addition, it has a very Strong smell, that may be undesirable (I use it anyway because I want strong, and beautiful hair).

Lucia Bettler, owner of Lucia's Garden, is a friend of mine, and has allowed me to share with you an essay she prepared for the 12th annual Blessing of the Garden, for The International Festival Insitute in Round Top, Texas.

A Feast of Flowers: Nourishment for the Spirit

There is a feast in these gardens here at Festival Hill. It's not the usual meal that we think of with vegetables and edible flowers and herbs, but a feast of flowers, indeed, food for the senses as well as the spirit. Driving here to Roundtop, our eyes feasted on fields of bluebonnets, purple winecups, Indian paintbrush, splashes of magenta, and generous expanses of yellow. Who could not fall in love with a flower? How could you ignore one? That little being whose soul must be acknowledged and met? Georgia O Keefe once said that people rarely see a flower, for “to see it takes time, like to have a friend takes time.” We require flowers. They are a gardener’s spiritual nourishment, bringing us joy and beauty, love and comfort. Imagine a milestone birthday celebration, a wedding, a Valentine’s Day, the birth of a child, or the funeral of a loved one without flowers. Flowers open up our hearts just as they open up a room, creating warmth and beauty. While we don’t normally eat the flower bouquet from a wedding, or a Valentine’s Day arrangement, we savor it with our eyes, taking in the beauty and meaning that the blossoms convey. Janice Ross, a friend and Houston potter, once told me that she was ready to sell a particular teapot because she had “eaten it.” She went on to say that the Japanese have an expression to explain that type of nourishment. It means: I have taken it all in, it has become a part of me, there is no need to hold on to it any longer, and I can part with it. I have never forgotten that concept. Eat flowers with your eyes and they become a part of you. What shall we eat next? A poem, perhaps, a song, a piece of embroidered linen, a handmade necklace…the possibilities are endless. Our lives without the presence of such beauty, become anxious. There is so much to be fearful of these days. Are we in a recession? Is the price of gasoline really going up again? Will this war ever end? Is technology edging out the human connection? Will we be able to teach the young to truly cherish the earth, our mountains and oceans , our beloved plants and animals? We are afraid of illness. We are afraid of aging. Are we doing okay? Do we feel fulfilled and accepted? Are our loved ones safe? How do we create hope? We do what brings us together as humans: we celebrate—sitting at the table, eating a meal, breaking bread together; we grow flowers. We create peace. In Mexico, there is a wonderful feast of flowers that occurs in late October and early November. To let go of the fear of death, the Mexicans celebrate it. Christianity merged with ancient Aztec harvest rites and saints joined the gods at a festival for the dead. Celebrating life conquers death. In Oaxaca, I saw home altars filled with fruit, flowers, food and gifts. In preparation, the markets were brimming with marigolds, calla lilies, baby’s breath, jewel toned dahlias, gladioli and Mexican mint marigold. Even the simplest graves and home altars were covered with flowers to welcome the spirits that had passed on, and returned for a few days near All Soul’s Eve. This past November, I witnessed Old-World reverence and customs in the cemeteries of Krakow, Poland; the celebration was not as elaborate as Mexico’s feasts, but just as moving. At night, we took the tram to Krakow’s largest cemetery to see hundreds of votive lights intermixed with armloads of flowers to honor the ancestors. Out of death comes life: the flower creates seeds, dies, and new life is born. Or, as May Sarton wrote,“...the door is always open into the “holy”—growth, birth, death. Every flower holds the whole mystery in its short cycle…” Most of us have favorite childhood memories of flowers. My mother grew red spider lilies that bloomed every September. I remember the fragrant sweet peas climbing up her fence. She particularly loved a small antique rose, called Perle D’Or, plump and peach colored. I grow them now and remember her. Flowers have a language all their own, and there are dictionaries that can tell you what each individual flower means. Every flower holds two messages: the folklore and history of the flower, and our own personal memories of them. They evoke the past and celebrate the present. There are also stories about flowers that were once mortals, who were changed into blossoms by the Greek and Roman gods. Remnants of flowers have been found with human remains in ancient tombs. There is more lore than we can cover here today. Mary Oliver, the New England poet writes that she “cultivates astonishment”. She has faith that if she goes out into the garden or the woods and “pays attention,” she will be astonished, and that paying attention brings love. “How shall we speak of love,’ she writes, ‘except in the splurge of roses?” In 1975, I gave a pouch of rose-scented potpourri to a gentleman I taught school with. In his beautiful cursive handwriting he wrote me a letter of thanks: “Did you stop to think that potpourri smells of memories, old gardens on late Sunday afternoons, bouquets of flowers in shaded rooms, the quiet of another time and another place? Thank you for this gift of memory. " Quite by accident, I came across an essay “In my Mother’s Garden,” by our keynote speaker Kathy Barashe. In it, she talks about all that her mother taught her about gardening and flowers, and about how the Easter bunny would always leave her a beautiful purple hyacinth in her Easter basket. Once her mother found her lips stained blood red, from a rose petal that Kathy had eaten. She was eating flowers even then! Flowers decorate tables where we welcome guests to eat. They cheer hospital patients, adorn altars. They are part of the celebration of all the stages of our ever-changing lives. They often speak of what our voices cannot. Flowers offer nourishment of another sort. My heart will never forget the image of a single rose that had been placed on a brick courtyard step in Auschwitz. It said, “we remember.” Flowers tell us that love is greater than death. They affirm our being and bring us hope. Flowers teach us how to live in the present moment. Last week while driving down the street, I saw an elderly Asian man helping his granddaughter ride her tricycle. He picked a few fuchsia-colored azaleas to place in her helmet. She was smiling widely, and our eyes met in mutual delight. With spring, we look upon the world with new eyes, after the dark and inward contemplation of winter. I am reminded of the words of a poet I discovered in college, e.e.cummings. He often wrote about the vagaries of life, about love, and relationships, and he was especially fond of Spring. He said, “The thing perhaps, is to eat flowers, and not to be afraid.” Let us take his advice.

Trends...Merely Guidelines

Trends are great for guide lines when you simply just don't know what else to wear to a chic party or event. Trends on the other hand shouldn't be taken so heavily in mind on a daily basis.Since not all trends work for all people. I think people should get a grip on their self expression but yet know what the hell fits their body types. Classics rather than trends are more elegant, beautiful, sexy and suitable for all body types since you have to be fitted to wear them. As far as being fitted into clothes, always take your measurements before you shop. Examples of classic celebrities are Audrey Hepburn, Gary Cooper, Marilyn Monroe, Rudolf Valentino, Elizabeth Taylor, & Marlon Brando.

Unconventional Fashion and Beauty Advice

Fashion: The body represents the mannequin. Fashion, overall, is the basis of humans vs. survival, judging on textiles. The up most impressionable outlet that the world shares in unity of social , cultural and psychotic rebellions.

Beauty: As far as beauty goes, it is what it is by definition. Beauty is also very controversial and has a past that has a great history. Yet, with this history, it has not changed much since human eyes can only handle certain shapes and sizes, color, design, sound etc., in accordance with harmony and balance.

He was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, traveled throughout North America and Europe, and is currently working on his own technique, which is a realistic way of painting, focusing on composition. Fashion Week Mexico Spr/Sum 2008

Fashion Week Mexico (Oct. 23-26) was interesting, yet depressing. Some of the fabric choices and prints were absolutely hideous. Anything that makes you look like a glowing space cadet is a "fashion don't." However, there are some labels that would be interesting to keep an eye on, such as Mecha, Carlos Mora, Tadeo Errasti, Carla Gonzales, Barbie Terrones, and although I hate to admit it, Nicholai, Nicky Hilton's fashion line. I do prefer her taste over her sister's. Her collection was very tasteful and pretty. Jon Sonan's men's collection was chic and wearable. Amelia Toro's collection was elegant and poised. I would wear her designs.Sadly, the label Sergio Alcala (Alcala is my great grandmother's maiden name) was horrible. It looked like someone threw up neon paint all over the runway. Navigo Lines Barona's swimwear was pretty typical, lots of skin and cleavage. Any Mexican guy would swoon over this. Some of the designs were pretty, and cut well, such as a few of Citrico's designs, but the color and fabric selections left me puzzled. Any designer (Malafacha) that puts a man in a long sheet for a skirt or python print spandex pants, should be shunned. I hope to learn more about these designers and see their progression, for the better, in the near future.

Dear Readers,

I have never been one to focus on race, skin color, ethnicity or the like. I grew up in a bi-racial, and bi-cultural family which was the norm for me, and always will be. I am in touch with both sides of my family, and familiar with the positive things such as traditions, languages, and love. Unfortunately I am also very familiar with the negatives that come with being bi-racial. For those that are interested, I have decided to include a bit of my background here.

I wanted to let you, my valued readers and fans, know where I come from. I am mixed, part "white" and "Hispanic". My father is of European decent, such as Scottish, English and Dutch. My mother is of European decent as well, with Spanish and Italian decent, but she also has Arabian ancestry. You can say she is a European Mexican, but strangely enough, her skin is more brown because of her father's ancestry. Her mother (my grandmother) was born in Zamora, Michoacan, Mexico. Many of her decendants live in Texas and California. Her father, the man with Arabian ancestors, was born in Michigan. His family spoke Spanish as well, and a lot of them now live in the Valley region of Texas.

The way I live my life now is highly influenced on the way I was brought up, and I am a better person because of it. I was taught to love everyone, and treat everyone with respect, no matter what they look like or where they came from. I abide by that and teach my children these principles, as well as talking to and influencing my husband to do the same.

Please know that this weblog is written with all of this in mind, and that I care for each and every one of you that read and hover over the links provided.
